Oil Spill Awareness – OPRC Level 0 (IMO Equivalent)

This course is ideal for individuals who are:

• New to the oil and gas, shipping, ports or environmental sectors
• Supporting emergency response in non-operational roles (e.g. logistics, communications, admin)
• Working within regulatory or oversight roles in government, port authorities, or environmental agencies
• Looking to gain awareness-level understanding before progressing to OPRC Level 1 training

It is structured to help build confidence and awareness in a safe, accessible format—no prior response experience required.

Through interactive modules and scenario-based learning, you will:

• Understand how and why oil spills happen, and their potential impacts
• Explore how oil moves and changes in the marine environment
• Learn how to estimate oil spill extent using the BONN Oil Appearance Code
• Discover key response strategies including containment, recovery and dispersants
• Gain insight into safety, waste management and post-spill activities
• Understand your role within the broader response and preparedness effort

1. Spill Preparedness
   Discover the causes of oil spills, risk factors, and the importance of proactive planning.
2. Incident Response
   Learn how oil behaves in water, how it’s tracked, and the primary techniques used to manage and minimise its impact.
3. Spill Termination and Close-Out
   Explore how responses are concluded, including demobilisation, post-spill monitoring and learning from each incident.

Delivered through e-learning, you will have access to OSRL's online Learning Management System (LMS). This innovative digital learning system allows you to conveniently manage your study-time over single or multiple sessions.
