Controlled flow solutions - subsea containment toolkit for complex well incidents
Containment is a source-control response option used to create a controlled flow system from a subsea well to the surface following a well control incident. It may be considered where capping alone is not appropriate or where a cap-and-flow strategy has been selected.
The containment toolkit supports cap-and-flow response strategies by enabling hydrocarbons to flow from the wellhead through subsea flowlines and processing equipment for safe capture, processing and transfer.
Designed to support a range of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) as capture vessels, the containment toolkit is compatible with industry-standard well testing equipment and can be integrated into a wider source-control response strategy. The containment toolkit is strategically stored in the UK, Brazil, Singapore, Norway and the USA to support global response readiness.

Build Subsea Source Control Capability
Our on-demand Source Control training courses provide a structured pathway to build understanding of subsea response operations and equipment. The Introduction to Fundamentals course covers core principles, system components, and deployment considerations across a range of scenarios. Building on this foundation, the Intermediate Mission-Specific course focuses on the practical application of source control strategies in real-world contexts, supporting more informed decision-making during an incident.
Containment FAQs
-
It enables the controlled capture and redirection of hydrocarbons from a subsea well to a MODU when the well cannot be shut in by a capping stack alone.
-
Flexible flowlines and jumpers are stored in the UK, Brazil, and Singapore. All other components are stored in the UK, Norway, and the USA, ready for air or sea freight.
-
The system is designed to integrate with a wide range of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs) and standard well testing equipment.
-
Hydrate inhibitors can be injected into the system using a coiled tubing spread, ensuring continuous and stable flow in deepwater environments.
