As climate change accelerates ice melt and geopolitical dynamics reshape global shipping patterns, the Arctic is entering a new era. Traffic across high‑latitude passages is increasing, with vessels now able to transit routes that were previously inaccessible or too unpredictable. These emerging opportunities come with significant operational risks—especially for incident preparedness and response teams.

What this webinar will cover

  1. The rise of new Arctic routes

We explore the rapidly changing Arctic shipping landscape, including the Northern Sea Route and the Transpolar Sea Route, and the unique challenges of operating in these regions.

  1. Why it matters for the industry

Cold weather dramatically alters how oil behaves: thickening, emulsifying, weathering more slowly, and interacting differently with ice. Traditional spill response methods may be less effective or even unviable.
We’ll discuss:

  • How sub‑zero conditions affect mechanical recovery, pumps, skimmers, and containment tools
  • When alternative strategies become more viable
  • The human factors: risks and safety considerations in Arctic field operations
  1. How OSRL prepares for this emerging risk

With Arctic activity on the rise, OSRL ensures that our responders are trained and ready for cold‑weather scenarios. This session includes insights from our annual Cold Weather Oil Spill Response Training, held this year in Norway.

Delivered by experienced OSRL specialists

This webinar is led by OSRL Senior Response Specialists with extensive real‑world experience responding to incidents around the globe.

Each presenter has personally completed this year’s cold‑weather training in Norway, bringing first‑hand knowledge. Participants will gain a rare look at the realities of Arctic spill response from those who have trained directly in the field
