Supporting global wildlife response through expertise and collaboration

Our partnership with Sea Alarm, a renowned organisation with established expertise in wildlife emergency preparedness and response, offers our members technical advice as part of our core membership coverage.

As part of this service, two specialists are available from Sea Alarm 24/7 to assist the IMT with data collection,  monitoring, and analysing any unfolding scenario while supporting the Member’s decision making  to prevent and deal with significant wildlife impacts:

  • One specialist is ready to be deployed onsite to assist the Incident Management Team (IMT), developing the wildlife branch and engaging with relevant in-country authorities, stakeholders and responders.
  • The second specialist provides remote support, while maximising the use of Sea Alarm's international connectivity.

Sea Alarm is a non-governmental organisation that works internationally with governments, industry and NGOs to improve global preparedness for oiled wildlife incidents. Sea Alarm's personnel have unique expertise that includes wildlife incident assessment and management, wildlife planning and preparedness development, response network management, good practice dissemination, and design and development of training and exercises. Sea Alarm specialists do not handle animals, but as advisers, they help create the environment and conditions that mobilised wildlife response specialists need to make a difference during an incident.

Specialist wildlife expertise

Immediate access to two Sea Alarm specialists—one deployable onsite and one providing remote support—helps ensure expert advice is available throughout the incident.

Global connectivity and local coordination

Sea Alarm bridges international good practice with local response needs, helping your IMT coordinate effectively with national, international or local authorities and stakeholders.

Enhanced wildlife response capability

Sea Alarm specialists help create the right conditions for an effective wildlife response, guiding decision-making and supporting the mobilisation of specialist responders.

Why is Sea Alarm’s technical advice important

Pollution that causes risks or direct impacts to wildlife can cause serious additional challenges to an unfolding scenario that our members can be confronted with. Effects on wildlife easily lead to social impacts and potential reputation risks. In the early days of an incident the IMT may not have enough capacity to anticipate and deal with these wildlife issues that may develop into reputational risks if unattended. When activated, the Sea Alarm advisory team will assist the IMT with:

  • Analysing data and information to anticipate wildlife impact risks
  • Understanding the wildlife aspects and taking pro-active decisions
  • Initiating the wildlife branch and making it work along with government agencies and non-governmental organisations
  • Identifying local, regional and international expertise relevant to the scenario via its database
  • Identifying and contacting key authorities and stakeholders relevant for engagement in the wildlife branch
  • Identifying response gaps in the unfolding scenario and deal with them before they become a reputational problem for the client
