Supporting shallow-water capping operations through specialist deployment and installation solutions.
Shallow-water environments can present unique deployment and installation challenges during source control response operations. OSRL's Shallow Water Capping Solution brings together specialist systems designed to support the positioning, alignment and installation of capping stacks in these operating conditions.
Available through enhanced membership coverage, the Split Lowering System (SLS) and Snub Line Winch System (SLWS) work together to support controlled capping stack deployment and installation activities. Maintained response-ready and strategically located in Norway, both systems can be mobilised by road, sea or air to support incident-specific response requirements.
Together, these capabilities extend capping deployment options and provide additional flexibility when planning and executing shallow-water source control response activities.
Split Lowering System (SLS)
The Split Lowering System (SLS) supports capping stack deployment in shallow-water environments where conventional vertical access above the well may not be possible. Developed in partnership with InterMoor, the system enables controlled positioning and installation of a capping stack where surface conditions or infrastructure may limit traditional deployment methods.
Key facts
- Designed for water depths between 75m and 600m.
- Supports shallow-water capping operations.
- Can be used alongside the Snub Line Winch System (SLWS).
- Components are stored in Norway and available for rapid mobilisation.
Snub Line Winch System (SLWS)
The Snub Line Winch System (SLWS) mounts directly onto an OSRL capping stack and provides the precision and control required during the final landing sequence when aligning a capping stack onto a blown-out well. The system enables real-time positioning adjustments to help reduce the risk of misalignment or equipment damage during installation.
Key facts
- Can be used with the Split Lowering System (SLS) in water depths between 75m and 600m.
- Can operate as a standalone system in water depths up to 4,000m.
- Components are stored at the OSRL Norway Base and available for rapid mobilisation.
FAQs
-
The Shallow Water Capping Solution combines the Split Lowering System (SLS) and Snub Line Winch System (SLWS) to support the deployment and installation of capping stacks during shallow-water source control response operations.
-
SLS supports the positioning of the capping stack, while SLWS provides precise control during the final landing and alignment sequence. Together, they support controlled installation of a capping stack in water depths between 75m and 600m.
-
Yes. SLWS can also operate as a standalone system in water depths up to 4,000m, providing additional positioning control during capping stack installation.
